The Great God Entertainment (page 129-130)
For centuries the Church stood solidly against every worldly entertainment, recognizing if for what it was- a device for waisting time, a refuge from the disturbing voice of conscience , a scheme to divert attention from moral accountability. For this she got herself abused roundly by the sons of this world. But of late she has become tired of the abuse and has given over the struggle. She appears to have decided that if she cannot conquer the great God of Entertainment she may as well join forces with him and make what use she can of his powers. So today we have the astonishing spectacle of millions of dollars being poured into the unholy job of providing earthly entertainment for the so-called sons of heaven. Religious entertainment is in many places rapidly crowding out the serious things of God. Many churches these days have become little more than a poor theaters where fifth-rate “producers” peddle their shoddy wares with the full approval of evangelical leaders who can even quote a holy text in defense of their delinquency. And hardly a man dares raise his voice against it.
The great god Entertainment amuses his devotes mainly by telling them stories. The love of stories, which is a characteristic of childhood, has taken fast hold of the minds of the retarded saints of our day, so much so that not a few persons manage to make a comfortable living by spinning yarns and serving them up in various disguises to church people. What is natural and beautiful in a child many be shocking when it persist into adulthood, and more so when it appears in the sanctuary and seeks to pass for true religion.
Is it not a strange thing and a wonder that with the shadow of atomic destruction hanging over the world and with the coming of Christ drawing near, the professed followers of the Lord should be giving themselves up to religious amusement? That in an hour when mature saints are so desperately needed, vast numbers of believers should revert to spiritual childhood and clamor for religious toys?
Remember, O LORD, what has happened to us; look, and see our disgrace.... The crown has fallen from our head. Woe to us, for we have sinned! Because of this our hearts are faint, because of these things our eyes grow dim. (Lamentations 5:1,16-17)
Considering what I wrote Sunday called “Enough” I believe God is confirming what He said to me. Tozer, was writing this in the last 50's. The Church gave up their fight and gave into the enemy (god Entertainment) and today look what we have we have an entertainment industry that pushes the envelope on all side. We are entertained with movies, TV, computer, internet etc... Adults do not know what to do if they do not stay busy with something that can entertain them. Most adults have a cell phone that links to the internet so that they can stay on top of all that is going on. Our children have learned from us that they must be entertained at all times and so they have a cell phone in one hand and a lap top in the other. If you take the gadgets away from them they don't know how to function. Take a kids TV , game system, cell phone, and computer away they will scream “I'm bored” Take it away from an adult and they will go stir crazy too. We are a people who must be entertained at all times. Even in the churches today if the worship isn't concert performance than people don't want it. If the preaching isn't entertaining and tickling the ears of those who sit there its not wanted. For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear. They will reject the truth and chase after myths. 2Timothy 4:3-4
If you were to take a poll in churches of questions in the bible verse questions about certain movies 9 out of 10 Christians would have the answer for the movies verses the bible. Now that is sad!! And we wonder why the world acts the way they do and why we have such a hard time reaching them. You cant reach someone with the promise of hope and salvation when you are not living it. Oh, maybe I am wrong about that. You can reach them with a watered down version of the gospel that will entertain their ears so that they can stay in sin but still worship the Lord.
Face it we like to be entertained. There isn't anything wrong with going out and having fun and having a little entertainment. But today we do not want a little we want it all. If we were to write down what we did everyday, every hour, every minute, we might just see how much time we waist being entertained by the foolish things of this world!
