Apostasy Part 2

Theological & Moral Apostasy

(Notes from this section taken from the Life in the Spirit Study Bible- LISSB)

Rebellion in the church will have two dimensions: theological and moral apostasy.

Theological Apostasy is the departure from and rejection of a part or all of the original teaching of Christ and the apostles

The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. (1Tim 4:1)

For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. (2Tim 4:3)

The popularity of unbiblical teaching will be primarily the result of Satan's directing his demonic host in a more intensified opposition to God's work. Christ’s second coming will be proceeded by an increase and greater intensity of Satanism, spiritism, the occult, demonic deception and demonization in the world and in the church. ~Donald C. Stamps.~

-We can see these things taking place today. Many who believe in Jesus will fall away from what they once knew and will resist the truth and accept more and more the sinful patterns of the world. You find many ministers and educators of the gospel giving little resistance to those following the sinful patterns of the world. We must stay alert of persons with great charisma and what appears to be anointing. If they are deceived, then they can deceive others with their false teaching. We must have a desire to know the truth. We should have our hearts surrendered to God. We must also have an understanding of what it means to have a “reverent fear of God.”

-False leaders will offer, “salvation” and cheap grace, while ignoring Christ's demand for repentance, separation from immorality, and loyalty to God and His standards (2 Peter 2:1-3 12-19) False hope that centers on human activity and goals of self-interest will become popular (2Ti 4:3-4)(LISSB)

Moral Apostasy is the severing of ones saving relationship with Christ and returning to sin and immorality. Some leaders may proclaim right doctrine yet abandon God's moral law and standards of righteousness and thereby corrupt the truth and loose deception(Isa 29:13, Mat 23:25-28) (LISSB)

The Lord says: "These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is made up only of rules taught by men. Isa. 29:13

God's people were coming before Him in prayer, worship, song, and praise, even though their hearts were not committed to Him or His commands. They acted as if God's revelation and His righteous standards were not obligatory. Instead of cherishing God and His Word, they filled their lives with the religious rituals and traditions taught by their leaders, and in false security they lived for themselves. (Jer 4:3-4; 24:7;31:31-34). A similar destructive spiritual condition exists in some churches today. People praise and honor God with their lips while having no real love for God or His righteous precepts. When their worship service is over, they seek the pleasures of sin and the world to satisfy their worldly desires (Mk 7:6,8) the result is spiritual blindness and deception. (LISSB)

Many churches will tolerate almost anything for the sake of numbers, money, success, and honor. The gospel of the cross with its call to suffer, to radically renounce sin, to sacrifice for God's kingdom and to deny oneself will be unpopular (Roman 8:13 Matt 24:12, 2Ti3:1-5;4:3)(LISSB)

For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live. Romans 8:13

Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold. Matthew 24:12

WOW! I am speechless! If this doesn't describe where we are today as Christians, I'm not sure what will. We see this going on today in the body of Christ. We tolerate so much sin, and how dare we call sin out and expose it for what it is. On Sunday morning we have people who come in to praise the Lord but have NO true love for His righteous precepts! We honor Him with our lips but our hearts are far from Him. We should be careful to remember that judgment happens first to the church. For it is time for judgment to begin with the family of God; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God? 1Peter 4:17 What is He going to judge? He will examine and openly reveal in true reality our secret acts(Mk 4:22; Romans 2:16)our character (Romans 2:5-11) our words( Mt 12:36-37) our good deeds(Eph 6:8) our attitudes(Mt 5:22) our motives(1Co 4:5)our lack of love(Col 3:18-4:1)our work and ministry(1Co 3:13) to sum it up believers will have to give an account of their faithfulness or unfaithfulness to God(Mt 25:21,23;1 Co4:2-5)and of their deeds in light of the grace and opportunity and understanding made available to them (Lk 12:48; Jn 5:24; Ro 8:1). The impending judgment of Christians should perfect the fear of the Lord (2 Co 5:11;Php 2:12;1Pe 1:17)and cause them to be clear minded and self-controlled, to watch and pray(1Pe 4:5-7) to live holy and godly lives (2Pe 3:11).(LISSB)
